Call for Papers: Africa Journal of Language Studies (AJLS)


The Africa Journal of Language Studies (AJLS) invites scholars and researchers to submit original and theoretical articles, notes, book reviews and commentaries under the theme:

African Languages in the 21st Century.

AJLS is an international peer-reviewed online journal published by the Institute of Language Studies at Kabale University. The journal focuses on development-leaning research within African languages, emphasizing their role in society and promoting global engagement.

Scope of the Journal

Submissions are welcome in the following areas:

  • African Languages and Cultures
  • English Language Studies
  • Foreign Languages
  • Literature and Linguistics
  • Language Education
  • Journalism and Communication Studies
  • Performing Arts
  • Anthropology and other language-related disciplines

Specific areas in African Linguistics include:

  • Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics
  • Lexicology, Lexicography, Pragmatics, Discourse Analysis
  • Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Language Documentation

Other relevant topics include:

  • Language diversity and multilingualism in Africa
  • Language endangerment and revitalization in Africa
  • Kiswahili in Africa and the global stage
  • African languages in performing arts
  • The role of language in communication and development
  • African languages and technology
  • African languages in education and literature
  • Second language acquisition and use in Africa
  • Foreign language learning and use in Africa

Submission Guidelines

  • Articles should be between 4,000 – 8,000 words (excluding references).
  • Submissions should be in Times New Roman, 12pt.
  • Articles can be written in English, Kiswahili, Runyakitara, Luganda, or French.
  • Articles in African languages or French must include an English abstract and executive summary.
  • Include your name, affiliation, and article title on a separate sheet.
  • Submit articles in Word format to: ajls@kab.ac.ug.

Important Dates

  • Submission Deadline: April 1, 2025
  • Acceptance Notification: June 1, 2025
  • Publication Date: July 1, 2025
