Prof. Johnny Mugisha

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs)

Prof. Johnny Mugisha is a distinguished Agricultural Economist and academic leader currently serving as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at Kabale University. With over three decades of experience in higher education and research, Prof. Mugisha brings a wealth of expertise in agricultural and environmental economics, institutional development and academic leadership.

He holds a PhD in Agricultural Economics from Justus-Liebig University Giessen, Germany, an MSc in Agricultural Economics, and a BSc in Agriculture from Makerere University. His doctoral research focused on the impacts of structural adjustment policies and external market effects on Uganda’s agricultural economy, using Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling.

Before joining Kabale University in February 2025, Prof. Mugisha rose through the academic ranks at Makerere University, from Assistant Lecturer to Full Professor. He served as Dean of the School of Agricultural Sciences (2013–2021), Head of Department, and most recently, Professor in the Department of Agribusiness and Natural Resource Economics. He has supervised over 100 master’s students and 8 PhD graduates.

Prof. Mugisha is a prolific researcher with over 75 peer-reviewed journal articles and a track record of 24 collaborative research projects across Africa and Europe. His research interests span food security, agricultural value chains, environmental sustainability, and development policy. He has mobilized research funding from institutions including the EU, Sida, BMELV-Germany, RUFORUM, and the African Union Commission.

A Fellow of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Mugisha is a seasoned academic administrator with significant contributions to policy, curriculum development, and institutional governance. He has served on national boards such as NAADS and Bukalasa Agricultural College and led policy consultations for government ministries and international agencies, including FAO and aBi Development Ltd.

He is also a co-founder of the Environment for Development Initiative (EfD) Makerere Centre, a hub that promotes evidence-based environmental policy in Uganda and connects with global EfD centres.

Supervision

Prof. Johnny Mugisha has made outstanding contributions to academic mentorship and capacity building through the supervision of students at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. His supervision work spans over two decades and includes:

Prof. Mugisha’s mentorship legacy continues through the Johnny Mugisha Foundation, an NGO formed by his former students to provide technical services in agriculture and natural resource economics for community development.
