Dr. Richard Nabongo

Dr. Richard Nabongo is a Lecturer in the Department of Applied Design at the Faculty of Engineering, Technology, Applied Design and Fine Art. With a career dedicated to the intersection of creative expression and functional utility, Dr. Nabongo brings a wealth of practical and academic experience to his role, specializing in Pottery/Ceramics and Graphic Design. His professional expertise spans the dynamic fields of Visual Advertising, Print Media, and Visual Communication, complemented by a deep mastery of Ceramic Technologies. Dr. Nabongo is a scholar-practitioner who bridges the gap between traditional artistic disciplines and contemporary industrial application.

Dr. Nabongo’s research is driven by a commitment to improving livelihoods through sustainable design and technology. His academic interests are multifaceted, focusing on: Visual Communication: Exploring how design languages shape advertising and media. Ceramics Technologies: Investigating advanced ceramic applications for societal benefit. Cooking Fuel Efficiency: A pioneering area of research where he explores the intersection of ceramic engineering and energy efficiency to develop sustainable household solutions. His work in cooking fuel efficiency and ceramics technology for food preservation highlights his dedication to using art and design as a tool for addressing real-world challenges, such as environmental and food sustainability as well as economic empowerment.

Dr. Nabongo holds a comprehensive academic background that underpins his multidisciplinary approach: PhD in Art and Design (Ceramics) – Nkumba University, Entebbe; Master’s Degree in Industrial Art and Design – Nkumba University, Entebbe; Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial and Fine Arts – Makerere University, Kampala; Diploma in Education (Art and Design) – Kyambogo University, Kampala. 

In his current capacity, Dr. Nabongo is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of designers and artists. He teaches across both Graphic Design and Pottery/Ceramics, equipping students with the technical skills and theoretical knowledge required to excel in the creative industries. He is committed to fostering an environment of innovation where students are encouraged to explore the functional and aesthetic possibilities of their craft.
