Dr. Ezra Francis Munyambonera is a distinguished economist, academic and policy researcher currently serving as a Senior Lecturer in Economics and Head of the Department of Economics and Statistics at Kabale University. With extensive experience spanning academia, research and public policy, he brings a wealth of expertise in macroeconomics, financial systems and development economics.
He holds a PhD in Economics, a Master of Science in Agricultural and Applied Economics, and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with specialization in Agricultural Economics, all from Makerere University. His academic and professional journey reflects a strong commitment to advancing economic knowledge and its application to real-world development challenges.
Prior to joining Kabale University in 2022, Dr. Munyambonera served at the Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC), where he rose through the ranks to become Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Macroeconomics Department. During his tenure, he led and contributed to impactful research on financial sector development, public finance, taxation, agricultural financing, and economic growth, with numerous publications in reputable international journals and policy series.
He has also held key roles at the Uganda Coffee Development Authority, where he contributed to policy development, economic research, and strategic planning for the coffee sector. In addition, Dr. Munyambonera has extensive teaching and supervision experience at leading institutions including Makerere University Business School, Kyambogo University, and Bugema University, mentoring graduate students in diverse areas of economics.
At Kabale University, he provides strategic leadership to the Department of Economics and Statistics, overseeing academic programs, research development, and staff growth. He actively contributes to institutional governance through various committees and research initiatives, including serving on technical review and doctoral committees, and spearheading strategic planning processes.
Dr. Munyambonera’s work is driven by a strong focus on evidence-based policy, economic transformation, and capacity building, making him a key figure in advancing economic research and academic excellence at Kabale University and beyond.

Research Interests
Dr. Ezra Francis Munyambonera’s research interests are grounded in applied economics and policy-oriented analysis, with a strong focus on addressing development challenges in Uganda and Sub-Saharan Africa. His key research interests include:
- Macroeconomic Policy and Analysis, including inflation dynamics, monetary policy, and economic growth modelling
- Financial Sector Development, with emphasis on banking performance, financial inclusion, and credit systems
- Public Finance and Fiscal Policy, including taxation, public expenditure, intergovernmental fiscal transfers, and pension reforms
- Agricultural and Rural Finance, focusing on agricultural value chains, smallholder financing, and market access
- Development Economics, particularly economic growth determinants, external development finance, and infrastructure financing
- International Trade and Regional Integration, including trade finance, competitiveness, and foreign direct investment
- Energy Economics, with interest in household energy demand and clean energy access
- Policy Evaluation and Impact Assessment, especially in public sector programmes and economic development initiatives
His research is largely policy-driven, contributing to evidence-based decision-making and national development planning.
