Community Outreach – Psychosocial support to in-Patients
Abstract
Abstract
The Department of Social Work and Social Administration, Kabale University, conducted a community outreach activity focused on providing psychosocial support to in-patients at Karoli Lwanga Hospital, Nyakibale in Rukungiri District. This outreach aimed to complement medical care by addressing the emotional, social, and psychological needs of patients undergoing treatment. Through structured counseling sessions, therapeutic conversations, and supportive engagement, the team created a safe environment for patients to express concerns, reduce stress, and enhance coping mechanisms. The intervention also promoted patient–caregiver communication and strengthened social support networks within the wards. By integrating academic expertise with real-world service, the outreach contributed to improved wellbeing of in-patients while offering students practical exposure to professional social work practice. This initiative reflects the University’s commitment to community engagement, holistic health, and transformative social services.
