As a department of social work and social administration, we pride ourselves on being a significantly vibrant and popular department in the university with unique programs that meet the demands of society. We are committed to upholding the value of quality, thereby producing well-enlightened and influential professionals in society equipped with a good comprehension of society and humanity to ably transform our world for the better.

Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. It looks at the principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility, and respect for diversities as central components of social work. Social work as an interdisciplinary field includes theories from economics, education, sociology, medicine, philosophy, politics, anthropology, and psychology, among others.

Our students are exposed to fieldwork practice in human services, which refers to a supervised internship at an approved community-based agency. This helps students acquire hands-on experience and get the opportunity to put the theory learned in class into practice.  Students may find placements in a variety of human service settings, which include education, health care, community agencies, social welfare, mental health, non-governmental agency services, and local government administration. The department is endowed with highly qualified teaching staff, and our curriculum is approved by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

The department offers a variety of programs, ranging from a diploma in social work to a bachelor of social work, a bachelor of social sciences, and a master of social work (with an area of specialization). The department is also in the process of developing more social transformation programs, like the Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work and the Postgraduate Diploma in Child Protection and Practice. Because of the current situation in our society, the department will develop short courses in youth development and counseling as a profession. The department has designed a variety of intervention concepts to tackle societal problems through an outreach intervention for social transformation. Such as psycho-social support for the in-patients at the hospital in the Kigezi region; community sensitization on HIV/AIDS in the Kigezi region; and school-based suicide prevention through youth and parents’ sensitization in the Kigezi region.

The department aims at developing professional social workers and administrators to attend to the increasing challenges of the community while transforming the world into a better place to live. We are proud to announce that our graduates are out in the field, holding various positions of great responsibility in local government, military, immigration, prison, police, health, education, business, non-governmental organizations, USAID, and the general private sector.

We encourage you to be part of our student body today and join the training, skilling, and knowledge endeavors to solve the social problems that we find surrounding us. Make a difference in your immediate environment; join us today.
