Assistant Lecturer - English

Evaristo Arineitwe is a passionate, enthusiastic and result-oriented Assistant Lecturer in the Department of English (Institute of Language Studies at Kabale University). He holds a Master of Arts in Literature and Communication (MALC) from Bishop Stuart University and a Bachelor of Arts with Education (BA. Ed) from Kabale University.

Since 2013, he has been teaching English Language, Literature in English and General Paper in Ugandan schools like Kabale Trinity College, St. Mary’s College Rushoroza, Nyabikoni Secondary School and Bishop Kivengere Girls’ School Muyebe. To boost his expertise thereof, he has attended a number of workshops like Active Teaching and Learning (organised by Enabel) and The New Lower Secondary School Curriculum (organised by NCDC) among others.

Besides, he has also taught Literature and Communication Skills at Kabale University to undergraduate students for nine years (since 2014). While teaching at Kabale University, he has also attended a number of workshops on research and publication, e-learning, the AIMS system, writing research grants etcetera.

In 2023, he published two journal articles in the East African Journal of Arts and Social Sciences titled Morphological Deviation in Africa’s New Brood by Timothy Wangusa & Graphological Deviation: A Defamiliarizing Trope in Timothy Wangusa’s Poetry.

He is a published poet. His three poems; “Loud Silence”, “The War Mongers” and “Boiling Point” were published in Thorns, Tears and Treachery, a Collection of Poems, Essays and Artworks on the Sudanese Civil War by The International Human Rights Arts Movement (IHRAM) in 2023. In 2024, his first poetry collection titled The Boiling Point and Other Poems was also published by Generis Publishing.

Details of my Teaching Career:
I have taught English Language and Literature in English at both Ordinary and Advanced levels in Secondary schools in Kabale, Uganda for ten years (from 2013-2023). This has given me considerable expertise in handling content for Literature in English at both levels of secondary school Education.

I have taught all genres of literature; Lit P310/1(Prose and Poetry), Lit P310/2 (Drama/Plays) and Lit P310/3 (Novels and Short Stories). In the execution of my teaching profession in Secondary schools.

I have been the Head of Department for English and Patron for Debating and Writers’ Clubs at Kabale Trinity College partnering with Femrite in a campaign called Tukosawa (meant to nurture young writers in secondary schools in Uganda).

Also, I have attended a number of workshops on English and literature pedagogy, the recent one being the new Lower secondary school curriculum in Uganda.

I have worked as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of English at Kabale University since 2024.

I have worked as a Teaching Assistant and taught Literature and communication Skills at Kabale University for nine years (from 2014-2023). I have taught certificate and diploma courses.

Working under the supervision of lecturers in the department of English (Institute of Language Studies) at Kabale University, I have tutored students in Oral Literature and Short Story, Aspects of the novel, Aspects of Poetry, Introduction to African Written Literature (especially on Recess Programme).

At Kabale University, I have also attended a number of workshops on E-Learning, the AIMS system of managing students’ marks, and educational pedagogy (thanks to specialists from the faculty of Education).

Working under the auspices of lecturers, I have also supervised students’ projects (proposals) especially those of Diploma in Education (primary) and research for students of Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary alike). These are majorly courses offered in the Department of Open Learning of Kabale University (recess).

My other accomplishments:
I have participated in the reviewing of courses for English and Literature in the department of English (Institute of Language Studies at Kabale University) as per the National Council for Higher Education requirements. Focus was on the courses taught to students of Bachelor of Arts with Education (offering Literature and English).

In the same vein, I have also participated actively in the writing of new programmes in the department of English for example Master of Arts in Literature which The National Council for Higher Education assented to (the programme is currently being taught). I was majorly pivotal in carrying out a needs assessment survey among fellow teachers of English language and literature before the new course would be written, and eventually, accredited. I was also the minute secretary in most of the meetings to discuss the writing of this course. Besides, I have also attended meetings to discuss the writing of new academic programmes like Bachelor of Performing Arts and Bachelor Journalism and Media Studies. In all these meetings, I was the minute secretary.

From June (2024) to date, I have been the coordinator of Communication skills (a cross-cutting course for all first-year students at Kabale University). This has equipped me with a number of skills like leadership skills, teamwork and/or collaboration, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and generally, interpersonal skills.

I am also an accomplished emcee. I have emceed at school functions for example at Kabale Trinity College, a renowned private school in Kabale District Southwestern Uganda (my Alma mater) as well as public functions like wedding parties and thanksgiving ceremonies. This has upped my public speaking skills (thanks to the fact that I teach the Art of Public Speaking to undergraduate students at Kabale University).

Creative Works:
Being a poetry enthusiast, I have written a collection of 67 poems titled The Boiling Point and Other Poems (published by Generis Publishing). One of the poems from the above collection titled “The Return” has featured in an anthology titled Where Broken Hearts Go and Other Poems edited by Egara Kabagi etal.

Besides, I have published three entries (poems) under the International Human Rights Arts Festival (IHRAF) through its African Secretariat. The poems were published in an anthology titled Thorns, Tears &Treachery: A Collection of Poems, Essays& Artwork on the Sudanese Civil War.

In a bid to celebrate twenty-five years of existence of Kabale Trinity College in style, I spearheaded a campaign to write a school magazine in 2020, a project that was a huge success. I bade teachers, school administrators and proprietors contribute articles to that cause. With my editorial team, we edited articles and produced The Trinitarian (the school magazine).

In 2022, I was also instrumental in proofreading and editing The Ray, a school magazine of St. Mary’s College Rushoroza (a government-aided secondary school also in Kabale District, Southwestern Uganda).

Besides, I have not only edited but also contributed articles to The Kab Mirror, a kind of magazine/ a bulletin run by the Institute of Language Studies at Kabale University.

Master’s Dissertation:
“Linguistic Deviation and Parallelism in Timothy Wangusa’s Poetry” supervised by Assoc. Prof. Danson Sylvester Kahyana and Prof. Laban Erapu.

Skills:
