Department of English Language
The department of English, Kabale university aims at equipping students with critical thinking skills, analytical, and communication competences through the study of literature, English language, and communication skills. The department offers a wide range of courses in literature and English language to the undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with Education degree. The students are exposed to the study of African literature, European and American literatures, creative writing, oral literature, rhetoric, composition, discourse analysis, and sociolinguistics.
The department of English also offers two post-graduate programs, namely, Master of Arts in Literature (MLT) and Master of Arts in Linguistics (MAL). The students of literature are offered advanced studies in literary and cultural studies covering courses such as Advanced literary theory, cultural and gender studies, literature and human rights, literature and environment among other courses. In Linguistics, courses such as Advanced phonetics and phonology, Advanced syntax , Advanced semantics and pragmatics, Theory and practice of translation among others are offered.
The department has a total of 3 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, and 4 lecturers with PhD who teach and supervise research at the post-graduate level. The graduates find job opportunities in both public and private sectors. They are employed as teachers of English and Literature in secondary schools, editors in the print media and publishing companies, translators, Assistant lecturers in public and private universities, researchers in Non-Governmental Organizations and in local governments.
