Background Information
Travel operations as a niche for tourism is globally recognized as an important economic driver of many economies especially those in sub-Sahara Africa. Tours and Travel operations has been given a special consideration in Uganda as a strategy for employment creation and poverty reduction in a number of places including Southwestern region of Uganda which are endowed with attractions. One of the strategies for optimizing tourism economic outcome is through empowering communities with relevant tourism skills which can enable them to become meaningful participants in tourism operations and allied business. Kabale University through her Institute of Tourism and hospitality has responded to this noble mission by providing training opportunities in various fields which are uniquely organized. This is the spirit within which the department of travel operation management derives the justification of its existence, and in which it endeavors to thrive.
The department is currently running short courses in tour and travel in protected areas and business planning in tourism. These short courses are carefully designed to meet the needs of various practioners in the tourism industry especially tourism graduates who need hands on skills to gain initial foothold into the industry. These courses are meant to last for at most six weeks. Apart from the short courses, the department shall in the near future launch new programs at both diploma, bachelor and master levels.
The department has staffs, with impressive academic qualification, experience and motivation to empower young and up-coming tourism professionals. The department mission, as stated below, is the departmental interpretation of overriding university mission and it will be achieved in collaboration and combined efforts of industrial players in tourism, conservation organization, concerned local communities and government of Uganda.
Mission
To empower Ugandan youths and up-coming tourism practioners with relevant skills, knowledge, understanding which enable them to deliver high quality and sustainable tours and travel experiences and be innovative within the overall tourism industry.

Research Agenda
The department values research activities which provide new insights, advance theories and new models in linkages of travel operations with local economies, circularity in travel behaviors and system, sustainable wildlife tourism experiences and climate change footprints mitigation strategies in sensitive ecosystems of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
