Professor Abdulfatai Adinoyi Murana is a Professor of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He holds BEng, MSc and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering, all from the University. He joined the academic staff in 2007 as an Assistant Lecturer and rose through the ranks to the professoriate in 2022.
His research and teaching focus on highway and transportation engineering. He works on pavement analysis and design, bituminous materials, traffic engineering and transportation planning. A particular strand of his work examines how industrial, agricultural and plastic waste materials can be used as sustainable fillers and modifiers in hot mix asphalt. He has also contributed to the development of the Nigerian Empirical-Mechanistic Pavement Analysis and Design System (NEMPADS). His many peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers and a Springer book chapter are widely shared with the research community.
Professor Murana is an experienced supervisor of postgraduate research. He has seen 11 doctoral candidates and dozens of master’s students through to graduation. He has served the University as Assistant Dean (2019–2021) and Deputy Dean (2021–2025) of the Faculty of Engineering. Beyond the University, he serves as an external examiner, external assessor and moderator at other Nigerian institutions. He has also been a member of National Universities Commission accreditation panels for civil engineering programmes.
He is a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and a Fellow of both the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers. He has served as Chairman of the Society’s Zaria Branch. His contributions to teaching, leadership and service have been recognised with awards including the Merit Award of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (2024) and a Transformational Leadership Award from the Nigerian Universities Engineering Students Association (2025).
