Ms. Afuwa Kagoya recently defended her masters thesis(chemistry) and awaits graduation. She graduated with a bachelors’ degree of Science in Industrial Chemistry from Makerere University in January 2018. She has worked as an internee in a juice processing pilot plant and a foaming industry. She has also volunteered as a Chemistry Research Assistant at the Department of Chemistry, Makerere University with a 4-year experience in extraction of environmental samples using Solid Phase Extraction (SPE), Soxhlet Extraction and Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE) of environmental samples for chemical  pollutants such as Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs),Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), PFAs, Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs), Flame retardants.

She has further trained in Good Clinical Practices, Leadership Management, Good Agricultural Practices, Mentorship Program for Effective Communication and Global Transformation, Introduction to Sustainable Development in Business. She has  also trained in analysis of environmental samples using the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry and Liquid Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia (AAU) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya (JKUAT), respectively. In addition, Ms. Afuwa has intermediate knowledge in Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS), High Performance Liquid Chromatography  (HPLC) and Infra Red Spectroscopy (IR).

Recently, she had a 3 months (March to May 2023) training in Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry techniques from Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia (STU).

Research Interests

I am interested in analytical and environmental research, community based research, public health, pharmacology and Science Education

Afuwa’s  research interests are in water, land and air pollution for sustainable development by focusing on the key mechanisms that can be used to remove and or reduce environmental pollution especially water bodies by the already existing persistent organic pollutants and other related chemical pollutants. I also intend to explore more about nanotechnology and quality water access with the research basics I have attained.
