Master of Science in Agricultural Sciences (Animal Production Management)

The Master of Science in Agriculture , Animal Production and Management is designed to train professionals with advanced knowledge and practical skills in livestock production, management, and sustainable animal-based agricultural systems. The programme equips graduates to address challenges in livestock production, animal health, feed and nutrition, breeding, and enterprise management, while promoting productivity, profitability, and sustainability.

Building on the broad foundation provided by undergraduate agricultural programmes—such as animal science, livestock production, agronomy, agricultural economics, veterinary science, and related biological sciences the MSc in Animal Production and Management allows students to specialise in areas including animal husbandry, livestock nutrition, reproductive management, animal breeding, farm business management, and value addition in animal products.

The programme addresses the growing demand for highly skilled animal production specialists in government ministries, livestock research institutions, NGOs, agricultural extension services, private sector agribusinesses, and development organisations. It also provides a strong foundation for students intending to pursue academic careers, recognising that a master’s degree is the minimum qualification for entry into university teaching and research.

Students develop competencies aligned with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) graduate expectations. These include the ability to critically analyse livestock production systems, apply modern technologies and innovations in animal management, design and implement research in animal production, make data-driven management decisions, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

The programme integrates training in research methodology, quantitative analysis, farm and herd management, animal nutrition, breeding and reproduction, livestock health management, farm business planning, and value chain analysis. Students gain practical skills through field work, farm practicums, laboratory exercises, and independent research projects.

The expected outcomes of the MSc in Animal Production and Management align with international and regional development frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 1: No Poverty), the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), and NEPAD, which emphasize sustainable livestock systems, improved rural livelihoods, and strengthened human capacity in agricultural production.

At the national level, the programme contributes directly to Uganda’s Vision 2040, the National Development Plan III, the Plan for Modernization of Agriculture, and the Parish Development Model, all of which highlight the need for skilled livestock professionals to enhance productivity, food security, farmer incomes, and sustainable rural development.
