Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology

Biotechnology is a biological discipline that applies a variety of techniques to manipulate living organisms, their parts, products and services to improve human wellbeing. It is an inter disciplinary programme that embrace disciplines such as biology, chemistry, engineering Agriculture and computing. Biotechnology knowledge and skills have been traditionally used in baking bread, brewing beer and making cheese and yoghurt. Currently the world is experiencing global challenges that range from climate change emergence of diseases and increased pollution that require technological advancements. Biotechnology is recognized today as a potentially powerful catalyst for socio-economic growth through the development of new curative products, improved plant and animal breeds that are drought and pest tolerant, high yielding and increased nutritional value. The proposed BSc Biotechnology at Kabale University is to meet the immediate demand for professionals in Biotechnology or biosciences as an enterprise in Uganda.

Entry requirements

  1. Direct Entry Scheme: The applicant is required to be a holder of an Ordinary level certificate of education or its equivalent from a National Examination Body, with at least five passes. Furthermore, he or she should have obtained at least two principal passes at the Advanced Level (UACE) in either Biology and Chemistry or Agriculture.
  2. Diploma Entry: Holders of a diploma in Agriculture and other related biological discipline (such as Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology (Biology/ Chemistry)) who have done Biology and Chemistry or Agriculture at A-level, with at least a second class or its equivalent from a recognized institution shall be admitted to this program.
  3. Mature Age Entry Scheme (i) Be aged 22years and above. (ii) A candidate must have passed the mature age entry examination administered by institutions accredited by Uganda National Council for Higher Education with at least 50% mark.
  4. Higher Education Certificate (HEC) A candidate must have passed a higher education certificate course in biological sciences with a credit.
