Dr. Daniel Matovu

Lecturer Pharmacology

Dr. Daniel Matovu completed his PhD training in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the UNIFESP in Sao Paulo, Brazil and part of his doctoral training in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania. He was a Research Associate in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior in Alberta, Canada under IBRO scholar award. His primary appointment was Kabale University at the School of Medicine.

Dr. Daniel’s primary research interests include the mechanisms underlying neuropharmacological drugs and drugs of abuse, neuronal excitability and neuronal plasticity, neuroendocrinology, and neurogenesis. The emphasis of the laboratory is to understand the basic mechanisms of normal function in order to better address dysfunction — i.e., in neurological disorders and psychiatric illness. An area of long-standing interest has been the cortico-limbic circuitry and adjacent brain regions, so there has been an emphasis on drugs of abuse disorders, as well as epilepsy.

Dr. Daniel has contributed broadly to basic and translational neuroscience. He has served on numerous advisory boards for national and international organizations, such as the Brazilian Epilepsy Society, the Epilepsy Foundation, and Parents Against Childhood Epilepsy. He has also served as a reviewer for numerous journals. He has won grants for the university since starting his appointment.  He has published over 40 articles and co-edited 3 books. He is also an ambassador for the Latin America Summer School of Epilepsy (LASSE) in Uganda.
