Uganda Martyrs’ Day PoemCollins Mann
The third of June every year
Marks the day when with no fear
The forty five martyrs of faith
Faced the wrath of their death
Receiving no mercy from their burners
But held high Christian banners.
Namugongo shrines stand still
As testimony to those who fill
The grounds annually to see
The ash that makes the sea
Of faces wonder what hearts
Those brethren had to bear the hurt.
Pilgrims trek, drive and fly distances
To share experiences of instances
Of martyrdom in our land,
But our own belles and lads
Fill the Basilica with sinister intentions
Their pilgrimage perverse in dimension.
